Findings from the first round of NFER’s new Teacher Voice survey suggest that new technologies are changing the way teachers teach as well as helping to raise pupil attainment. However, the survey reveals that a significant minority of teachers requires more support and information to integrate ICT into lessons and only 27% of respondents felt that the leadership of ICT pedagogy in their school is inspirational. This latter finding raises questions about the effectiveness of NCSL’s Strategic Leadership of ICT programme, which was developed jointly with Becta and SSAT and launched in 2005.

When compared to research conducted in 2004, the new findings suggest that teacher competence in using ICT has improved but there is a continuing demand for training, with about a third of teachers responding that they don’t have the necessary skills to exploit the technology available to them. So how effective was the £230m National Lottery fund for teacher ICT training?
