It’s a sign of the times when Microsoft starts providing much of their developer software free to college and university students. Fearful of increasing competition from open source tools, Microsoft has little option. In fact it’s surprising that they have taken so long. The programme,  Microsoft DreamSpark, will be rolled out initially to students in the UK, the US, Belgium, China, Finland, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland and the software covered includes Visual Studio Professional Edition, XNA Game Studio, Expression Studio, SQL Server and Windows Server.
