The Independent Schools Council has appointed Dame Judith Mayhew-Jonas as its Non Executive Chair. Born in New Zealand and trained as a solicitor, Mayhew-Jonas has been deeply involved in both the education and private sectors, particularly through her involvement with the Corporation of London. She sits on the board of Merrill Lynch and was formerly Governor of Eton College, Provost of Kings College Cambridge, Chairman of the Royal Opera House, and has served on a number of boards including Birkbeck College, University of London, Imperial College, University of London, Gresham College, the Natural History Museum, and London First.

It looks as if the ISC have found someone who understands both politics and business as can be seen from her first public statement about her appointment where she said, ‘I am very happy to be joining a dynamic organisation at a time when the vital role of the independent sector in UK education is increasingly recognised. I am looking forward to constructive dialogue with Government, opposition parties and universities so that as many children as possible can achieve their full potential.’
