Last year we reported that the DfES was proposing to institute a kitemark system for accrediting phonic schemes for schools. We argued that as they were also planning to offer their own products, this was impractical and unfair. Publishers we spoke to all officially welcomed the idea, but off the record thought it another one of the DfES’s muddleheaded initiatives.

The DfES has backed down and is now letting phonics publishers assess their own products. The DfES still wants teachers to use one system and not to mix and match, something which has angered many who want to be allowed to use different resources with students of varying ability. So far 21 programmes have completed the self-assessment process and are listed on the DfES site.
