When it announced its preliminary results for the year ended 21 March, VT highlighted its wins in the education sector as major achievements. The largest by far was the £3bn Military Flying Training System (a joint venture bid with Lockheed Martin called Ascent) but in BSF it has also won Greenwich and is the preferred bidder in Lewisham (in a joint venture with Costain called Learning 21), together worth £500m. Chairman Michael Jefferies noted that, ‘We are also analysing opportunities in the Further Education sector and we aim to expand our school support capabilities’. The revenue of VT Learning and Services was up 18% to £112m but profitability was down by £1.1m from the previous year. What will hit this even further is the demise of Connextions and the transition to Local Authority responsibility for Young People’s Information, Advice, and Guidance.
