While VT have publicly expressed their disappointment at the consortia’s failure to win any part of the DTR, they do have a £6bn consolation prize. Ascent, their joint venture with Lockheed Martin and Rolls-Royce, was the Preferred Bidder to provide military aviation training for the MoD for the next quarter century. This will offset the cost of VT’s failed part in the DTR and their deal with Lockheed Martin also gives them the opportunity to pitch their training services to many other countries.
