It is a well-recognised fact that the demand for Head Teachers will continue to exceed supply and this situation looks set to worsen unless the National College of School Leadership and Teacher Development Agency can overcome two serious problems. The first is that many teachers, who have the ability to become Heads, simply don’t want the extra responsibilities (or salary). Second is that the education sector is rapidly aging just like the rest of the UK’s workforce.

When you add these two, you end up with a serious shortage of senior teachers that even the best endeavours of NCSL and TDA will struggle to overcome. On the flip side, for those prepared to be Deputy or Head Teachers, they are hot commodities for head-hunters. There are now companies like HeadSearch, part of PRG Recruitment who specialise in this area. While neither company’s websites are much to look at (literally), they do show this is a buoyant sector and will be for some time to come.
