BBC Worldwide has signed a deal with Hanarotelecom, South Korea’s largest broadband and telephone line supplier, to provide Internet protocol video-on-demand through its subsidiary Hanaromedia (formerly known as Celrun TV).
South Korea’s broadband market is a generation ahead of countries like the UK and US with most of the country able to access 3 Mb per second broadband at home and on mobile devices for just £11 per month. Hanaromedia’s 3.6m customers will only have to pay between £0.5-1 per month to view a BBC program an unlimited number of times within a 72-hour period. Consumers will have access to over 120 hours of BBC programs, including many of which could be classified as edutainment. This opens the door for content from other BBC educational genres, including BBC jam, to be delivered this way.
