What was previously known as the Specialist Schools Trust now has a new name and remit, which can be reached through a far simpler web address. Until now the main players in the Academies programme have been the DfES’s Academies Division headed by Sir Bruce Liddington and the Academy Sponsors Trust headed by Rona Kiley.

According to a SSAST spokesman ‘the trust has been dissolved with most of its work taken over by the expanded Specialist Schools and Academies Trust’. Perhaps more accurately the AST has been absorbed by the SST, although the AST is still a registered charity according to the Charities Commission website (it was only registered in July 2004). In theory Rona Kiley and her team will all take up senior positions at the new body. However, our calls and emails to clarify this have so far been unanswered.
