For years there’s been the contradiction of curriculum initiatives to encourage healthy eating in schools and the quality of school food. If it’s in the gift of the Government to correct this, it’s clear they have to put their house in order.
But, being realistic, will children choose the healthy option? Will they fill up on sweets on the bus to school? Will they arrive with packed lunches packed with junk?
Yes. But that’s not a reason not to do it if children can be encouraged to eat better over time. And so to sponsorship. EdComs commissioned research from ICM in 2004.
70 per cent of 500 parents interviewed were in favour of sponsored resources and 88 per cent of 225 teachers welcome sponsorship in the form of experts to run activities.
There are numerous issues schools will have to address if the new measures are to be effective, from dining areas to nutrition teaching to parents’ support.
Conclusion: opportunities arise for those with imagination and a will to work with schools for their mutual benefit.
